J.W. Bruce Picton, B.Comm, CA

Co-founder and Partner since 1996 and Managing Partner since 2004, Bruce Picton has developed and overseen strategic goals and objectives on behalf of the firm including the growth and development of the firm from its initial staff of 8 to the current level of approximately 45. He is involved in the research and development of issues confronting public accounting firms. Bruce has always pursued a policy of developing long-term relations with each client and striving to be part of the financial planning and operational decision making that occurs through a clients’ fiscal year.
Bruce is Chairman of the Audit Committee for a large public income fund with a market capitalization of approximately $400 million.
Bruce is married and has two children. He is very active in numerous sports as both a participant and coach.

Ruben E. Jeffery, B.Comm, CA
Partner
Ruben has been a partner since 2001 with over 12 years of public practice experience. Ruben's specific area of expertise is owner-managed small businesses, a significant number of which are in the medical profession. Ruben is experienced in the preparation of financing and funding proposals for client. He has also done a great deal of work with not-for-profit organizations as well as, First Nation audits and consulting engagements.
Ruben is an experienced presenter of financial and tax seminars, especially designed for the medical profession and more specifically for the University of Alberta.
Ruben is married and has one child. He participates in a number of sporting activities including golf, tennis and hockey. Ruben is an active volunteer with a variety of local organizations, including former Treasurer of the St. Albert Tennis Club, and is currently coaching kids soccer.

Trevor D. Lukey, B.Comm, CA
Partner
Trevor has been a partner at Veres Picton & Co. since January 2004 with over 10 years of public practice experience. Trevor's specific areas of expertise are owner-managed businesses, as well as CICA Handbook and reporting issues. He has extensive knowledge of First Nation accounting and auditing including government funded programs, profit-oriented enterprises, community service societies and internal controls and procedures assessments.
Trevor is married with two children and enjoys family time in the outdoors whether it be backyard rink building in the winter or camping trips in the summer.

Kevin C. Hamel, B.Comm, CA
Partner
Kevin Hamel has over 12 years of public practice experience and has been a partner at Veres Picton & Co. LLP since January 2005. Kevin's area of expertise includes assisting owner-managed businesses with their operational and planning needs. In addition, Kevin has vast experience in public sector auditing, specifically on the reporting requirements for INAC, CMHC, HRSDC, FNIHB and other government entities.
Kevin is married with two young children. Kevin is interested in all sports and is an avid golfer. Kevin is very active in basketball officiating and has previously served as President, Supervisor and Treasurer for the Alberta Basketball Officials Association. In addition, Kevin previously served as Vice President / Treasurer for the Leduc Community Basketball Association and as Treasurer for the Properties on Whyte Condo Association.

Robert D.A. Picton, B.Comm, CA

Rob has been a partner at Veres Picton & Co. since January 2007 and delivers a wide spectrum of abilities to the Firm and the clients he deals with. His skill set includes personal and corporate tax planning, a wide range of assurance engagement experience for organizations ranging from owner-managed businesses to not-for-profits and First Nations, and a sharp understanding of clients' business needs and how to achieve them. Rob brings enthusiasm and sharp thinking to exceed client expectations.
Rob is a proud alumnus of the University of Alberta School of Business, and has been with the firm since 2000. Rob is married and is an avid fan of college basketball and enjoys traveling, wakeboarding and golf.

Doug A. Sadler, BA, MBA
Principal - Director of Operations
Doug is the Director of Operations at Veres Picton and Co. is responsible for the day to day operations of the firm. Doug focuses on managing the short term and long term operations and growth of Veres Picton & Co., works directly with the Partner group on all issues of the day to day business of the firm and is expected to implement decisions and directions of the Partnership group.
Doug has a background in small to medium size business operation. He obtained a MBA in 2001 with a focus on small business creation and financing. Doug worked in a technology commercialization setting at the Alberta Research Council for almost 5 years after obtaining his MBA. His group managed a $10 million investment fund and was responsible for the overall investing activities of the ARC. He was also responsible for developing commercialization strategies for the investments in his portfolio including joint venture, licensing and spin out opportunities. Prior to his work with the ARC Doug spent 5 years in the Contract Surety Industry. His role included the overall assessment of client businesses for the purpose of lending financial guarantee services.
Doug is married with two children. When not working, Doug enjoys many different sporting activities including hockey, golf, and skiing.

Alan B. Thom, CMA
Principal
Alan has been a principal at Veres Picton & Co since January 2007 with nine years of public practice experience and 8 years in industry holding controllership positions. His areas of expertise include owner-managed businesses, preparation of forecasted financial statements and business plans, financing proposals, and First Nation economic development corporations.
Alan’s experience in industry allows him to bring a practical approach to addressing accounting issues and assist in operational reviews of accounting and finance departments.
Alan is married, has two children and spends time with his family downhill skiing, hiking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits.

Hugh C. Neilson, B.Comm, CA, TEP
Associate - Director of Tax Services
Hugh Neilson has been in public practice for over 18 years with his practice focusing on income tax services for individuals and owner-managed private corporations. Hugh has specialized in the tax area for the last 16 years, and provides tax consultation in many diverse areas, including business structuring and restructuring, negotiations with Canada Revenue Agency auditors and Appeals Officers, tax-effective compensation strategies, immigration and emigration planning, United States income tax compliance and strategies for tax-effective personal, family and estate tax planning.
Hugh has instructed pre-and post-certification courses for the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Saskatchewan in the area of taxation, and presented a workshop at the 2005 Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' National Conference on Income Tax. His articles have been published in Law Now and Lawyers' Weekly.
